THE KILLING (1956)

  1. Why did Kubrick hire crime novelist Jim Thompson to collaborate on the screenplay?

Kubrick was a fan of Thompson’s novels, particularly the hard-boiled dialogue that was Thompson’s specialty. He introduced producer James B. Harris to Thompson’s work and they decided to hire Thompson to collaborate with Kubrick on the screenplay for The Killing. Despite eventually only getting a credit for "Additional Dialogue" on the film, Thompson nevertheless collaborated with Kubrick again on the screenplay for Paths of Glory.
